I don't know about everyone else, but now I need to buy myself some easter candy (I think I'm more of a bunny person than an egg person, but no one buys them for me, so it becomes one more way to take care of myself!
I hope people have had a good week, and Contingent Cassandra's surgery was as uneventful as possible (or just having the expected events, anyway). And I know some people are on holiday this week, so I hope you enjoy it!
If you feel like it when you check in, tell us one nice thing that happened this week.
Articulated goals from last week:
Susan

1) Send off Alignment essay (or whatever I'm calling it)
2) Read intro + 2 chapters of the manuscript I'm reviewing (it has 12 chapters, so they're short)
3) Look into building permit for our new deck
4) Draft emails for fundraiser
Contingent Cassandra
--Get through surgery and begin recovery
--Do a bit of leisure reading
--If I'm feeling up to it, follow and participate in campus discussions of current issues (including an anti-DEI resolution coming up on the docket for one of our governing board's committees next week)

One nice thing that happened is that I went to a conference and it was lovely to see old friends!
ReplyDeleteLast week:
1. Revisions of at least next two chapters of Famous Author. If there is time after doing 2-4, start on the third. TWO DONE, INCLUDING FOOTNOTES MOSTLY
2. Request at least 2 of the needed images for Famous Author ONE,
3. Do the Panel Submission for next year's conference. NO (deadline extended)
4. Do at least one set of expenses. YES
5. Weights x 2, yoga x 2, walking 1 NO Yes
So the work went well, but there were a bunch of not sleeping well nights, so the workouts have suffered. While I only ordered one image, I figured out what I would order for a second, which took some time.
AND ALSO: managed to make appointment to get car serviced, processed returns for shoes that don't fit. Started to get the apartment under control.
I'm feeling pretty stressed right now about all that needs to get done before the end of my time at the best library ever, so just hoping that this week the sleep and workout stuff goes a bit better!
Goals:
1. 2 more chapters at least. With luck, figure out the 3rd, which I need to split
2. 2 image requests
3. Do panel submission for conference
4. One more set of expenses
5. Weights x 2, Yoga x 2, walk
Sleep is important; hope this week goes better in that regard.
DeleteSounds like a pretty productive week despite sleep difficulties, and seeing old friends is always good.
One nice thing: lots of support from family and friends as I went through surgery (which was basically successful, give or take some effects on my voice, which weren't unexpected, and I'm seeing incremental progress each day, so not too worried about that at the moment). All things considered, I'm feeling pretty good, and relieved to have the surgery itself over with.
ReplyDeleteGoals remain about the same:
--Continue recovery, including completing assigned PT exercises, adding back in walking and other leg-focused exercises as feels appropriate, humming and other gentle vocalization
--Continue leisure reading
--Write/submit at least brief written comment re: DEI resolution
--Maybe a bit of drawer and/or paper sorting if I'm feeling up to it
Hooray for basically successful surgery and feeling pretty good! Take your time for recovery and YES to leisure reading.
DeleteSo glad the surgery went as expected, and that you've had the support you needed. I think recovery is always slower and harder than they tell you!
DeleteLast week's nice thing really was the amazing author visit. She was just the kindest person I've ever met, with this incredible sort of gentle charisma that made people want to tell her things (very handy for an author!). She spent almost an hour and a half signing books after her talk, taking pictures with anyone who wanted it, talking to students who approached her with awe, etc. It was quite lovely and offset the week's challenges.
ReplyDeleteAs for the week's challenges, I mentioned my doxed faculty member. On Friday, a student came to me with good reason to believe that immigration was after her (for no cause)--a man was pounding on her door at night. Everything seems to be okay now. ?? It was all just very unsettling.
But nice things! After some very pretty weekend snow, the weather is quite warm and delightful this week!
Last week:
1) Send off Alignment essay - DONE
2) Read intro + 2 chapters of the manuscript I'm reviewing (it has 12 chapters, so they're short) - DONE
3) Look into building permit for our new deck - DONE, if a cursory glance at the Internet constitutes "looking into"
4) Draft emails for fundraiser - DONE on MONDAY of THIS WEEK
This week:
1) Read 4 more chapters of the manuscript (let's be ambitious)
2) Request or track down library books for abstract due 5/30
3) Process journal revision
4) Read honors thesis draft
5) Stay on top of grad student's exam prep documents
6) Finish fundraiser emails (probably with the help of a colleague who's much better at this kind of thing!)
Ughh I want everything to be DONNNNNNNE.
So glad the author was kind and generous - it makes such a difference with those visits. A nice corrective to dealing with the ugliness of a doxed faculty member. But it sounds like you kept up with life, which is sometimes all we can do.
DeleteI have been grateful not to be teaching right now, because the crazy is, well, crazy. Wishing you luck!
