Intersession post

 Hello!

Sending good wishes and happy thoughts to everyone for the holidays! May 2024 be an excellent year.

Also, sending thought and hugs for anyone who is struggling. Holidays can be stressful and sad and a messy combination of wonderful and terrible and everything in-between. Be kind to yourself, keep some space and peace for you, and find joy in all the little things wherever you can.

Just putting this out there in case anyone wants to drop in and chat over the break. The picture is something I made... Some may recognize the component parts, explanation in the comments if you want to guess first :)

Thank you everyone for making this a lovely community, it has lasted a long time and we all value that immensely!

  2. The image is a cathodoluminescence scanning electron microscope photo of a set of zircons mounted in epoxy and polished for analysis. The whole thing is about 1.5 mm top to bottom, individual grains less than 100 microns. When I make lots of these (moving one grain at a time with tiny tweezers) sometimes I get bored and do patterns, tree seemed appropriate for the time of year! They are about 530 million years old...

    1. Very cool, indeed. I thought they were probably some sort of crystals or something similar, but didn't realize how small they were.

  3. Oh Jane, I'm so sorry you had to say goodbye... You gave Fluffball a good home and companionship and everything he could want for many years and made his time here as good as it could be. He will be missed, but he was loved and that is the most important thing.
Sending love and good thoughts, all the cat people here understand how hard this is and how much you will miss him... Your description of him is perfect and just shines with love.

  4. I'm sorry. It is so hard to say goodbye even when we know perfectly well that it is the kindest thing to do. You gave Fluffball some good years and a lot of love, and he is lucky to have had you. He was a lovely cat and a good friend, and his little quirks make him memorable! Enormous sympathy.

  7. Very sorry to hear of Fluffball's passing. It sounds like he could have made use of more time to discover things that were, on examination, pleasurable rather than scary, but his health precluded that. The comparison between our own lifespans and those of our domestic feline companions is definitely a source of pain.
