2026 Session 1, Week 6

Since this is a short session, we're already halfway through it! Therefore I'm posting session goals as well as last week's goals (colo(u)r-coded to help find them in a long post) so we can think about whether it's time to get cracking on some items; face the need to jettison some; or realize that we have had to add some new goals. This seems like a good time also to remind ourselves of Julie's starting question about how we can practice kindness, to ourselves, to others, to our world.

I am writing this with a cat on my lap; not sure if it counts as my being kind to the cat or her being kind to me, but it does seem to increase both of our happiness.

As to this week's topic, here are some brief words from my man John McPhee: "Writing should be fun at least once in a pale blue moon." What might you do this week to make that pale blue moon rise?

Session goals:

Daisy

One new paper as first author... seriously, just one, I can surely do that???
Be effective and kind supervisor for two grads and two undergrads.
Do good job on massive important review committee.
Do something fun with friends once a week.
Exercise!!!!

Dame Eleanor Hull

*Research:
--abstract due end of this month for summer conference #2
--conference paper for April travel
--very overdue essay to finish ASAP (currently at 5005 words, so I have made progress during break)
--regular scholarly reading and language study, a process goal
*Teaching:
--read two PhD exams, consult with student as necessary
--plan out all class prep for the term and keep on top of it
*Personal:
--collect paperwork for taxes
--clean the garage and de-mousify it
--plan/organize travel for April trip and three others (two conferences, one purely fun)
--replace my ancient i-Pad
--In general, I'd like to do better at managing my time.

heu mihi

1) Finish messy, partial draft of article due in July (I'm teaching the book that it's about in April, so there's no sense in getting too far ahead of myself, since rereading it will be helpful)
2) Edit festschrift essays and draft at least part of the intro
3) Maintain exercise
4) Creative writing: average 2x/week, however drafty and silly it may be
5) Add occasional meditation to my weeks
6) Languages: Read one Italian novel; work on Latin and/or Old English
7) 3+ good habits a day*

JaneB

SELF-CARE: all process goals, for three term time months:
a) intentional movement for at least 20 minutes three days a week or 15 for four days a week (this can be stretching or more active exercising, but it needs to be intentional and additional to just "doing life"),
b) some kind of making (art or craft) a couple of times a week,
c) doing something gently social (playing D&D online counts, or a multi-text exchange with a non-work friend, or spending time on a forum a couple times a week
d) keep up reading for pleasure and read at least one non-fiction book
IMPROVING MY ENVIRONMENT: goals carried over!
a) keep doing the weekly list of chores - aiming for 75% done every week to be realistic.
b) sort out new shelving in my living space - and maybe a sofa
c) clothes storage solutions (currently all my actually-in-the-rotation clothes are either in the laundry basket, on the airer, or piled on a chair or in the clean undies basket. This is not ideal).
d) plus pay more attention to my finances. Not quite sure what that will look like, but it got dropped last trimester, and I need to be less careless!
TEACHING AND ADMIN: This is a lighter semester, but the first month is full of grading from the first semester whilst preparing for the second's teaching. Process goals here for the session because the session doesn't line up with our academic calendar (which is a mess...).
a) end each work week (Thursday) with everything set up ready to go for the following week and, if possible, have a solid start on the week after that.
b) limit working on teaching and admin issues over the weekend (let's say no more than 5 hours) and if possible ZERO
RESEARCH
I have a lot of balls in the air, but for this session I do have some very concrete goals, very different for me!
a) revise and resubmit two papers by due dates in early April (one I'm a minor author on, one I'm leading)
b) be on top of contributions to large project where I have a small part - by the end of the session I would like a clear plan for the little part of the project where I am the leading expert.
c) complete and submit a first-stage grant application
d) keep up with all the other pieces of research and writing as things come in and go out (they're all collaborative, so what happens when isn't entirely in my control).
c) make measurable progress with at least three other writing/data processing projects (I'll make a list now of what I'm working on)

Julie

1. Research/writing:
(i) Big article, which I am hoping to send to a top journal. Plan is to have a full draft I can present at a seminar at the end of April.
(ii) Chapter for a local history: I have a 15,000 word draft, and the editor likes it, but wants it to be twice as long (!) to fit with other chapters, so I need to pad it out. (IMO this is ridiculous, but I am committed now. And I will be paid for this.) Due April
(iii) Review article for anniversary edition of a journal, due 1st April.
(iv) Grant application: start the process.
Teaching
(i) Preparation for new first-year teaching next year (we are redesigning our curriculum, so I have to participate in this): keep to the bare minimum.
(ii) PhD corrections for final PhD student.
Other academic stuff:
(i) Organising committee for big anniversary conference in April.
3. Life admin/house stuff
(i) Plan big summer trip to celebrate significant birthdays (the actual trip will be self-care/fun, the planning is too stressful to be).
(ii) Finances: tax return, but also some big decisions to make
(iii) Small to medium jobs: decluttering, new lamps, get pictures framed and hung, get a standing desk and new chair for study, new chair for spare room (for reading in the morning sun), touch up paintwork in various rooms.
Kids:
(i) Ongoing parenting stuff, plus school work, final-year assignments, daughter's driving test.
Self-care/fun:
(i) Meet-ups with friends, especially around significant birthdays.
(ii) Reading for pleasure
(iii) Journaling
(iv) Do more creative stuff.
(v) Exercise

Susan

Research: minimal.
Famous Author: On Sunday night at 8 PM I submitted the corrected proofs and index for Famous Author, which will be published in March. There are going to be events and publicity stuff around this. But it's DONE. (It also means I had a minimal break and no relaxation over the holidays, which is not good.)
Rest of my life project: I have microfilms in the library and I need to scan them. I have two now, and I'll get the rest. It's something I can do during the semester, without worrying about reading everything or doing anything with it.
Other: My department is planning a small conference in honor of my retirement, but since the person who would have done all the work is now dealing with a mother who has terminal cancer, I'll probably do most of the planning.

Teaching: I am inventing a new course, mostly because I wanted to teach stuff that is relevant, so I'm mushing together parts of two different courses that I think speak to our current moment. The title is stolen from the American Historical Association's tagline, "Everything has a history". I want to do a good job, stretch myself and my students, but not kill myself. Classes start next week.

Admin: I'm chair of our graduate program, and budget cuts etc make life challenging. I also need to identify someone to take over. Or maybe I don't. But I'd like someone good (i.e. both efficient and kind) to do it.

Life: The plan is to sell my house and move at the end of the semester. So I need to do SIGNIFICANT decluttering, getting rid of academic books that supported teaching I won't do again, books I won't read, etc. It's a lot.

Last week’s goals:

Daisy

All trip accounting for lab work and conference
Read and edit student chapters

Dame Eleanor Hull

--1/2 hour writing/research on each of 3 days
--prep for 2 meetings
--prep for guest class
--prep for future class activity that has to be started way in advance
--prep for language groups
--first round of grading
--track down missing ILL book or institute library search
--gym at least 3x, yoga at least 4x
--remember to look at calendar/lists every day

JaneB

b) some kind of making (art or craft) x2
c) something gently social x2
d) read at least one chapter (of fiction) every day this week other than re-reading bits of Queen Demon
IMPROVING MY ENVIRONMENT: goals carried over!
a) 75% of weekly list of chores

c) reschedule decluttering person session.
TEACHING AND ADMIN:
a) deliver week 3 of teaching, chase up the last few students I need to meet with (or raise Welfare Concerns)

  1. Hello cat! It has been an "interesting" cat week here - Mr Shoutypants has an infected tooth, so Mr Shoutypants needs antibiotics. Mr Shoutypants has no wish to cooperate with getting the capsule of antibiotic into his innards. He is a very forgiving cat - he's indignant at my efforts but not angry or frightened, and he's back for affection/treats as soon as I'm done, no hiding or shunning. But I am VERY stressed about it all, and so far only about 60% of the tablets are getting to their intended destination. Yesterday he managed to hold one in his mouth whilst eating two treats, then spat it into my coffee (I don't THINK the aim was intentional, the coffee was just in the same room as the indignant cat).

    SESSION GOALS:
SELF-CARE: all process goals, for three term time months: keep
    a) intentional movement for 20 mins x 3 days or 15 mins x 4 days,
    b) some kind of making (art or craft) x2,
    c) doing something gently social x2
    d) keep up reading for pleasure and read at least one non-fiction book (have not started a non-fiction, useful reminder)
IMPROVING MY ENVIRONMENT: goals carried over! Keep. Have only acted on the first one though. Maybe now the days are getting longer... (also we have a reading week coming)
    a) keep doing the weekly list of chores - aiming for 75% done every week.
    b) sort out new shelving in my living space - and maybe a sofa
    c) clothes storage solutions (currently all my actually-in-the-rotation clothes are either in the laundry basket, on the airer, or piled on a chair or in the clean undies basket.
Process goals here for the session because the session doesn't line up with our academic calendar (which is a mess...). oh the marking season. It was... interesting. Getting lectures about meeting deadlines from the Deputy Head of School who had not met their deadlines was delightful...
    a) end each work week (Thursday) with everything set up ready to go for the following week and, if possible, have a solid start on the week after that yes, and so far this is going well.
    b) limit working on teaching and admin issues over the weekend (let's say no more than 5 hours) and if possible ZERO no zeroes yet, but yes. mostly because i've been low on energy...
    RESEARCH
I have a lot of balls in the air, but for this session I do have some very concrete goals, very different for me! the emphasis in the first half was more on marking and applicants for next year and teaching related stuff, but some research progress has been made. Small steps.
    a) revise and resubmit two papers by due dates in early April (one I'm a minor author on, one I'm leading) the minor author one is all done and accepted for publication, the other, well, we have a plan, I just need to hope everyone does what they said they would!
    b) be on top of contributions to large project where I have a small part - by the end of the session I would like a clear plan for the little part of the project where I am the leading expert. problems keep coming up and I'm no claser to a plan, but I'm not currently behind on anything
    c) complete and submit a first-stage grant application it's SO close to done - due end of February so I have a little time. And I'm also working on an application for a small teaching grant.
    d) keep up with all the other pieces of research and writing as things come in and go out (they're all collaborative, so what happens when isn't entirely in my control).so far I've commented on two full drafts and answered a lot of questions.
    c) make measurable progress with at least three other writing/data processing projects (I'll make a list now of what I'm working on) I've definitely progressed ONE thing

    1. LAST WEEK'S GOALS:
SELF-CARE: all process goals, for three term time months:
      a) intentional movement 20x3 or 15x4 only 20x2, but the whole cat to vet and pills and Human Guilt about cats with infected teeth who acted completely normal so weren't spotted quickly didn't help, and I was on campus two days. This week's a new week
      b) some kind of making (art or craft) x2 one - I doodled a design for a "you've paid your mortgage off" card following a side conversation with a colleague about how this milestone doesn't often get recognised but felt really significant and adult
      c) something gently social x2 multiple text exchanges and chats about Cats And Pills with my sister and online friends, plus two D&D games
      d) read at least one chapter (of fiction) every day this week other than re-reading bits of Queen Demon yes. I read a WHOLE (fairly short) novel on Friday, after Vet Visit Stresses!
IMPROVING MY ENVIRONMENT: goals carried over!
      a) 75% of weekly list of chores just under
      b) make a sketch for the new idea for the shelving in living space no
      c) reschedule decluttering person session. we're trying to find dates. I'll message again this evening...
      TEACHING AND ADMIN:
      a) deliver week 3 of teaching, chase up the last few students I need to meet with (or raise Welfare Concerns) well I sent them emails, and saw some of them. The rest are either attending-other-things-but-ignoring-me (rude! But does happen) or absent across the board so have had a welfare concern raised.
      b) prepare class materials for fifth week of teaching, with updating yes
RESEARCH. This all feels very repetitive but I AM making small bits of progress each week, not just listing-and-ignoring!
      a) work on the larger outline grant application yes! 1000 word section is now 999 words, and we've drafted all the fiddly boxes, just need to polish them
      b) analyse results and start another set of models running yes, and then discovered another problem which means we need to start over AGAIN. Sigh! This SHOULD be it - and much better to find the problem now (a small inconsistency in an input file but it is having visible effects later on so needs fixing) than after another couple of months of work! But this is why I'm stressing about the large project, my section involves the same kind of work on much larger datasets, so the sooner I get to start, the less stressful it will be when the inevitable little problems crop up
      c) read and comment on second draft of paper from Unexpected Collaborator done!

      NEXT WEEK:
SELF-CARE: all process goals, for three term time months:
      a) intentional movement 20x3 or 15x4
      b) some kind of making (art or craft) x2
      c) something gently social x2
      d) read at least one chapter (of fiction) every day this week IMPROVING MY ENVIRONMENT: goals carried over!
      a) 75% of weekly list of chores
      b) make a sketch for the new idea for the shelving in living space
      c) reschedule decluttering person session.
      TEACHING AND ADMIN:
      a) deliver week 4 of teaching
      b) prepare class materials for sixthweek of teaching, with updating
      c) make sure technical staff have all the information needed for the labs we're doing in March and update the risk assessments (sigh. necessary, but teeeedious).
RESEARCH. This all feels very repetitive but I AM making small bits of progress each week, not just listing-and-ignoring!
      a) work on the larger outline grant application - short sections to peer review. Start putting materials onto the actual application website.
      b) make a plan for restarting the modelling, check everything three times, start them running
      c) read and comment on fifth draft of paper from Foreign PostDoc
      d) schedule a meeting for revise and resubmit paper; spend an hour on the revision
      e) resend emails about small teaching project

    2. Poor Shoutypants, and poor you! I so feel you on the medicating difficulties. Basement Cat is having a pancreatitis flare-up, bad enough that today I had to give up on the idea that he would eat the food with drugs in it, and syringe-feed him the stuff instead. This is very slightly easier than just pilling him in the first place, but also messier.
I like the sound of your paid-off-mortgage card, and congrats on reading a novel!

      Delete
    3. Poor cat and you, though I did laugh at the pill landing in your coffee, sorry! Sounds like you are making progress on a lot of things, which isn't easy when you have so many things on at once.

      Delete
    4. I'm not sure whether I'm more sorry for you or for Shoutypants, but you're both suffering! I know how miserable it is to give an unwilling cat medicine. Although I can say the pill never landed in my coffee.
I'm impressed that you're making progress on all those research projects. And I love the "Paid off mortgage" card: when I did that, it passed without notice, but it does feel very grown up!

      Delete
    5. Poor kitty! Hope enough pills make it into cat for a quick recovery... and coffee safety!
Hats off for continuing to make research progress along with all the other things you are managing!

  2. Topic: is it fun if my most urgent task is finishing taking notes on an ILL that needs to go back? It is at least straightforward and not thinky, and since I have three days n a row on campus this week, that is probably a good thing.

    Session goal check-in:
    *Research:
--abstract due end of this month for summer conference #2: DONE
--conference paper for April travel: IN PROGRESS, c. 1500 words
--very overdue essay to finish ASAP (currently at 5005 words, so I have made progress during break): YES-ish: turned something in, which will no doubt come back to me with loads of comments at exactly the worst possible moment.
--regular scholarly reading and language study, a process goal: YES, now with added Greek group (modern languages are suffering a bit)
    *Teaching:
--read two PhD exams, consult with student as necessary: YES
--plan out all class prep for the term and keep on top of it: SO FAR SO GOOD
    *Personal:
--collect paperwork for taxes: GET CRACKING
--clean the garage and de-mousify it: Cleaning in progress; de-mousifying apparently successful so far as I can tell at present.
--plan/organize travel for April trip and three others (two conferences, one purely fun): GET CRACKING
--replace my ancient i-Pad: GET CRACKING
--In general, I'd like to do better at managing my time. KEEP the goal, anyway!

So I'm doing pretty well at everything that isn't personal. Interesting. In general, I'm fairly impressed with all I'm getting done, while also appalled at all the things I'm letting slide!

    Last week's check-in:
--1/2 hour writing/research on each of 3 days: TWO
--prep for 2 meetings: YES (skimped one)
    --prep for guest class: YES
--prep for future class activity that has to be started way in advance: STARTED
    --prep for language groups: YES
    --first round of grading: YES
--track down missing ILL book or institute library search: FOUND IT!!!
--gym at least 3x, yoga at least 4x: YES gym, yoga x2 or x3
--remember to look at calendar/lists every day: MOSTLY

    Next week's goals:
--1/2 hour writing/research on each of 3 days
--finish notes on ILL book and return it
--more prep for future class activity; also prep this week's activity
    --prep for language groups
    --second round of grading
    --book some travel
    --find some reviewers
--gym at least 3x, yoga at least 4x
--remember to look at calendar/lists every day

    1. I find note-taking quite satisfactory. But maybe that's just me.

Progress on a lot of things. And at least the de-mousifying has happened on the personal front.

    2. Love the cat picture!
Your session goals are going impressively well! I hope the trip planning one provides some fun in the next few weeks.
Note-taking is very satisfying, totally agree there. It is a nice concrete accomplishment without the pressure of having to be a fully formed "thing", a lovely intermediate product of reading and thinking, and a good building block for bigger bits of work...

  3. Kindness: well, we had sunshine for the first time in weeks on Saturday and have some again today, so getting out in it for runs is definitely a kindness to myself. Am giving a friend a lift over to the garage later to collect her car, which hopefully counts as a kindness to others. And I may bake a lemon drizzle cake later for kids and colleagues, if we have all the ingredients - this is prompted by having too many lemons. I suppose I could also use some in a G&T at some point...

Topic: writing is fun for me quite a lot of the time. But I think one way it's especially fun is when I'm doing close analysis of primary sources. So I will work as much of that as possible into writing this week.

    Session goals:
    1. Research/writing:
    (i) Big article, which I am hoping to send to a top journal. Plan is to have a full draft I can present at a seminar at the end of April. - IN PROGRESS
(ii) Chapter for a local history: I have a 15,000 word draft, and the editor likes it, but wants it to be twice as long (!) to fit with other chapters, so I need to pad it out. (IMO this is ridiculous, but I am committed now. And I will be paid for this.) Due April - IN PROGRESS, NOW ABOUT 21,000 WORDS
(iii) Review article for anniversary edition of a journal, due 1st April. - IN (SLOW) PROGRESS
(iv) Grant application: start the process. - NO. MAY JETTISON
    Teaching
    (i) Preparation for new first-year teaching next year (we are redesigning our curriculum, so I have to participate in this): keep to the bare minimum. - ISH (taking up more emotional energy than I would like)
(ii) PhD corrections for final PhD student. - DONE
    Other academic stuff:
    (i) Organising committee for big anniversary conference in April. - TO COME
    3. Life admin/house stuff
    (i) Plan big summer trip to celebrate significant birthdays (the actual trip will be self-care/fun, the planning is too stressful to be). - STARTED
(ii) Finances: tax return, but also some big decisions to make - IN PROGRESS
(iii) Small to medium jobs: decluttering, new lamps, get pictures framed and hung, get a standing desk and new chair for study, new chair for spare room (for reading in the morning sun), touch up paintwork in various rooms. - NOT YET, BUT KEEPING
    Kids:
    (i) Ongoing parenting stuff, plus school work, final-year assignments, daughter's driving test. - ONGOING! (driving test postponed until April, one assignment submitted, the other due Friday but under control, lots of Latin to drill into son)
    Self-care/fun:
    (i) Meet-ups with friends, especially around significant birthdays. - PLANNING
(ii) Reading for pleasure - YES
    (iii) Journaling - YES
(iv) Do more creative stuff. - A BIT
    (v) Exercise - YES

Not too bad, but I am on leave and some of these are things that have to happen in this session. So far, having different writing projects on the go at once seems to be working.

  4. Last week:
    1. Research/writing - one day on each project, fourth day wait and see which needs the attention. - YES
    2. Meetings and department seminar. - YES (one meeting I realised I could skip, the seminar was really interesting so glad I went)
    3. House/life admin: travel planning, financial stuff, return library book, decluttering. YES except decluttering
    4. Self-care/fun: exercise, reading, Netflix, journal, cook a new recipe. -YES ('marry me' chicken meatballs and orzo)

This week is the anniversary of my husband's death, so one for kindness, though it does get a little easier each year. Thankfully we are away for a few days next week, so there is that to look forward to.
    1. Research/writing - aim for one day on each project, focus on primary sources.
    2. House/life admin: travel planning for next week, travel planning for summer, financial stuff.
    3. Self-care/fun: read, journal, exercise, Netflix.

    1. I'm glad you have something next week to look forward to. It is interesting hearing about your one-day-per-project schedule works in practice--my projects tend to leak into one another, but I like the idea of separating by days.

      Delete
    2. Thinking of you as you face the anniversary. They change, but they are always there. And it becomes increasingly strange about the things they have not seen / do not know -- and I imagine that is even more so with kids. I still talk to my husband from time to time, telling him things.

    3. Sending thoughts for strength and grace during a tough week. Grief and anniversaries change so much with time and circumstances. I hope good memories are comforting.

  5. This term is just kicking my ass. Enough said.

    Session goals:
    1) Finish messy, partial draft of article due in July - YES, I did this in January and am letting it sit until April
    2) Edit festschrift essays and draft at least part of the intro - Essays are coming in and I've done nothing yet!
    3) Maintain exercise - YES
    4) Creative writing: average 2x/week, however drafty and silly it may be - HA HA HA I did this once, for 15 minutes. Will try it again, but starting next week, not this week.
    5) Add occasional meditation to my weeks - Four times, maybe, this term? That's something....
    6) Languages: Read one Italian novel; work on Latin and/or Old English - Working on Italian; have not worked on anything else
    7) 3+ good habits a day* - YES

What have I been doing, then, you ask? Why, answering emails, mostly! Ugh. Life feels like a long list of tasks that other people are inflicting on me right now.

I'll keep the goals, because why not, other than the Latin/OE thing under point 6. Italian is enough.

    Last week/two weeks ago:

    1. Finish program
    2. At least one more LOR
    3. Clean house for Dad's visit
    4. Prepare newsletter
    5. Send program highlights to chair
    6. Italian & exercise

    Uh...yes.

This week: It's February break for my kid, and because of Washington's birthday I don't teach on Thursday (don't ask), so kid and I will go see my parents Wednesday-Friday. I'll still have to work, but I could use the semi-break.

    Goals:
    1. Rest. I fell on the ice yesterday and pulled a whole lot of muscles in my leg (whacked my hipbone on the edge of a stone step--I'm lucky I'm not in the hospital!), so I will not be exercising, other than some stretching and maybe a run or swim on Saturday.
    2. Draft one of the mini-talks that I have to give next month.
    3. Keep reading Italian.
    4. Begin organizing festschrift stuff.
    5. Find some joy and pleasure.

I'm gloomy lately. The fall yesterday actually affected my mood quite a lot, I think--it was very upsetting, and I couldn't really walk yesterday evening--and I believe that I might still be recovering emotionally. (Physically, I'm much better today, with just a little limp, and no longer fear that I chipped a bone or fractured my pelvis.) Plus work feels very unrewarding and dull. But maybe that's also February talking? The days are getting longer, and that's pretty lovely....

...Also, I should mention that my book officially just came out, and I got my author's copies last week! It's quite an attractive book. I'm pleased, although there is also that feeling of anti-climax that comes at the end of a long writing project, you know?

    1. CONGRATULATIONS ON THE BOOK!!!! Yay! (And yes, also an anti-climax after everything.)
But so sorry about the fall, and just saying that your physical well-being does affect everything else. I hope recovery is noticeable.

    2. Body and mind are much more closely connected than we like to think, and both pain and fear have a terrible effect on one another. I hope by now you are feeling much better and able to enjoy watching the days get longer. And hey: admire those attractive copies of your book! Yay!

    3. Congratulations on your book being out in the world! Academic work is delayed gratification personified so counter that with some celebration! We will cheer!
Hope you feel better soon, and much empathy on the ass-kicking term... Some of them just do not stop!

    4. Huge congratulations on the book! But sorry about the fall. These things can really throw us. Hope you rest and feel better soon.

  6. I don't think I'm doing any fun writing right now. It's all for work, or a review or. . .
I'm trying to be kind to people but we're all frayed around the edges.

Session goals: I'm going to keep them all
    Research: minimal.

HAVE FINISHED FIRST BATCH, WAITING FOR THE NEXT
Other: My department is planning a small conference in honor of my retirement, but since the person who would have done all the work is now dealing with a mother who has terminal cancer, I'll probably do most of the planning. IT'S UNDERWAY

I HAVE SOME GREAT STUDENTS AND AM HAVING FUN.

Admin: I'm chair of our graduate program, and budget cuts etc make life challenging. I also need to identify someone to take over. Or maybe I don't. But I'd like someone good (i.e. both efficient and kind) to do it. TALKED TO ONE PERSON, MAYBE A SECOND>..

Life: The plan is to sell my house and move at the end of the semester. So I need to do SIGNIFICANT decluttering, getting rid of academic books that supported teaching I won't do again, books I won't read, etc. It's a lot. ON MY WAY

Basically, things are chugging along, and I think I'll survive.

    Last week:
    1. Figure out conference stuff - hand it off to colleague YES, BUT WILL HAVE TO HASSLE HIM
    2. FInish reading book for review YES< STARTED DRAFTING REVIEW
    3. Update syllabus HALF WAY THERE, NOT POSTED
    4. Multiple little admin things I THINK SO?
    5. Keep plugging away at clutter: office, room of doom YES
    6. Keep up with exercise, figuring out what I can and can't do. YES
    7. Have some fun YES, SOME

AND ALSO: Did the touch up painting that needed doing, started organizing the garage, bought and planted a bunch of plants (before lots of rain today, so, good timing). Did work on loan pre-approval.

I mean, it was a lot of little stuff, but I finished the book (very good, but some stuff annoyed me). Started writing the review, and I think I can finish a draft tomorrow.

Goals for this week limited, as I'm heading to a conference on Wednesday after I teach. (It's in nearby big city, so I get on the train and then get a taxi.)
    1. Finish drafting review
    2. Finish syllabus revision
    3. Keep up with teaching
    4. Send email to conference folks
    5. Contact yard guys about project
    6. Enjoy conference and big city

  7. Oh dear… Session goals are like the Ghosts-of-Academics-Past, thanks for the nightmares… I will do those first to get them out of the way…

    Session goals
One new paper as first author... seriously, just one, I can surely do that??? KEEP, NOT LOOKING GOOD BUT WORTH TRYING HARDER?
Be effective and kind supervisor for two grads and two undergrads. KEEP, GOING WELL ON MY PART
Do good job on massive important review committee. DONE!!!!!!!!! YAY!!!!!!
Do something fun with friends once a week. KEEP, 50% SUCCESS RATE NOT BAD SO FAR, ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT
Exercise!!!! ZERO, NADA, ZILCH SO FAR SO KEEP AND TRY HARDER…

Kindness to me (fringe benefits to someone else) – took yesterday (which was a holiday here) off from work, and painted theater sets instead. Fun, and quiet, and helpful to someone else.
Kindness to students – navigating interpersonal drama (which should have nothing to do with me but is impacting their work so by default my problem) with patience.
Kindness to universe in general – doing my best and trying to fun at theater production, it is tech week so my kid and I are at theater every afternoon and night this week – going with the notion that producing at least some art that makes people happy counts for something…

This term is by far the toughest one I’ve had in many years, and it feels like I cannot quite catch my breath… It is just one thing after another, and after an institution-wide meeting today it is quite clear that everything is going to get worse before it gets better. So, struggling with finding ways to manage and not quite seeing when things will let up.

    Last week’s goals
All trip accounting for lab work and conference DONE!!
Read and edit student chapters DID 2, 4 TO GO

    This week’s goals
    Read and edit student chapters
    Process data
    Write abstracts
Try to prep some teaching stuff for next week

    1. Fun writing... I actually really love doing revisions. I know that is a bit weird! But it is satisfying, and the progress is so visible... The "here's a blank page, go..." part is distinctly less fun, but cannot get to the fun revision stage without writing from nothing, so that is my next job...

    2. I always love how short and simple your goals are. Easy to see that you met one goal completely and are halfway on the other for last week, and really are doing quite well on session goals! Maybe not so much "try harder" but "take ten minutes to move the project forward, on a regular basis"? Even if it's just filling in footnotes or adding items to a lit review, that's less to do later.

    3. I think I would find the painting therapeutic - hope the same works for you. Sorry it's such a tough term.

    4. The painting was wonderfully relaxing! This afternoon I am going to do some more set stuff before rehearsal, it will be satisfying and look pretty...
@DEH, love that nudge to think about smaller increments... I'm really good at breaking down other people's work into incremental manageable chunks, but less so with my own.

    5. I'm sorry for the institutional context and getting worse before it gets better. This is such a hard time in higher ed in general.
