Spring Intersession - 3

Spring, hah! It's snowing chez moi (moi = DEH, in the American Midwest), which is better than the tornadoes and flooding people farther south are getting, so I guess I should shut up. It certainly adds an element of the pathetic fallacy to my story of the lonely scout trying to set up caches of supplies for an army, then fall back to her own lines, sabotaging bridges and otherwise thwarting the enemy as she goes. Then there's the problem of leaving footprints in the snow . . . although if it falls fast enough, the problem solves itself.

Anyway, goals for last week are as follows; how did you do on your expedition?

DEH
Lay explosives as above.
Blow up another bridge.
Continue mapping my retreat route and alternate routes.
Take out a nest of leathery-winged avians.

heu mihi

2. Service thing that fell into my lap
3. Plan for workshop
4. Request editorial meetings at Kalamazoo

Humming42
1. Write total 500 words for Perform
2. Read 200 pages of next review book

4. Wrap up conference detritus

JaneB
1) self-care - focus on water, fruit & veg and doing something in the evening however crap I feel
2) draft the discussion for Problem Child 2 and send off to former PDF
3) ten rows of square
4) 1 small chore per evening, since my Decluttering Helper is coming on Saturday and I need to get back to where we left things...
or in fantasy terms:
1) ignore the mountains, focus on relacing my boots ready for getting on the road
2) pass the Annoying Squeaky Thing to someone else to hold for a little
3) add a few stitches to my group's pictoral banner, for when we need to communicate our purpose to peoples who don't speak our language
4) reorganise all the stuff in my pack so it's properly wrapped up and findable.

Susan
1. Keep adding to collaboration essay (Tuesday and Thursday)
2. Friday and Saturday, do more reading and thinking to revise talk I gave last year, since I give it in NYC next week.
3. Read a book.
4. Walk two times

  1. How I did:
    Lay explosives as above. DONE.
Blow up another bridge. HALF-DONE: I guess that means it's passable but difficult for more than one person to cross at a time.
Continue mapping my retreat route and alternate routes. YES. Self-interest is strong here!
Take out a nest of leathery-winged avians. NO: got attacked by another LWA just as I was taking aim at the nest. This area is infested with them. However, this morning an unexpected ally delivered an LWA corpse in a timely manner, so that's something.

    This week:
Finish taking out that half-destroyed bridge, and blow up another one.
Continue mapping my retreat route and alternate routes.
Take out a nest of leathery-winged avians.
Try to keep the talking cats happy, and retrieve some heavier boots if I can remember which cache they're in.

    1. Oh, ugh, poor you! Those are terrible. I've never had one but have been a bystander for several, including at least one that required surgery---I hope you're able to pass yours! Take it easy: pain is exhausting all by itself, never mind what else is going on.

    2. Oh, dear. VERY painful. I hope you have lots of comfort tools in your pack, and that you find them.

    3. Thank you both! Not enjoying this, would rather be grading... but I can't really concentrate. Which is a reasonable reason to not grade. And I can't believe I keep having to justify this to myself - the workaholic assumptions get their claws in deep...

    4. Oh no! I have had two. The first one didn't last long. The second one took two weeks to pass, but it got less painful as it progressed. I hope yours eases up and passes without too much difficulty. Good luck!

  3. O JaneB, wishing you well! I saw that soccer legend Pele had a kidney stone removed over a few days ago--with hope the common bond will end with just having a kidney stone.

  4. I'm at the point in the hike when it's just one foot in front of the other. That's all I can do. I've been exhausted, and so has everyone I know. I've decided that the combination of the political world and the semester have just been overwhelming for almost everyone...

    Anyway, how I did:
    1. Keep adding to collaboration essay (Tuesday and Thursday) NOT AS MUCH AS I HOPED
    2. Friday and Saturday, do more reading and thinking to revise talk I gave last year, since I give it in NYC next week. YES, Identified new readings
    3. Read a book. SOME OF IT
    4. Walk two times ONCE

Reflection: See above for tired. I keep crashing in the afternoon if I'm at home and being unable to move... Also had more Mom care than I expected. But I did walk yesterday, and remembered that I feel better when I do this, so will keep this as a goal.

    Goals for the week ahead:
    1. Finish revisions to paper I am giving on Thursday
    2. Grade papers
    3. Read book
    3. Walk twice

Keeping this deliberately simple because I'm flying to NYC on Wednesday and will be there until Saturday. I'm giving a paper, and taking my grand-daughter to Hamilton. Also (I hope) seeing friends...

  5. Hi, folks. Just stopping by to give you an update. A little over a week ago, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. So far, it looks like we caught it early. The doctors don't think it has spread past the breast tissue. I'm scheduled for surgery on Friday (to remove the tumor and get the lymph nodes checked), and then I'll know more when the lab work comes back.

So, for now, my TLQ is to take care of this! I'll tell you what. It makes me realize that I'm glad I have prioritized family, but I'm mad that I have not focused more on my health.

Be sure you are doing self-exams and staying up-to-date on your scans!!

I'll let you know in a couple of weeks what I learn from the lab work.

    4. Oh, no. I'm so sorry. But I'm glad that the prognosis looks good at this stage. Take care, friend!

I've been meaning to put self-exams on my planner (as a monthly reminder) for years now. Thanks for the reminder.

  6. Not much to report here. Still trying to find my pace again.

    Last week
1 Write total 500 words for Perform: no
2 Read 200 pages of next review book: yes
3 Complete one batch of grading: no
4 Wrap up conference detritus: no

    This week, rerun.
1 Write total 500 words for Perform
2 Read 200 pages of next review book
3 Complete one batch of grading
    4 Wrap up conference detritus

  7. 1. Weekly things x5: Exercise - YES, write - YES, language - YES, sit - YES
    2. Service thing that fell into my lap - DONE, not such a big deal
    3. Plan for workshop - YES
    4. Request editorial meetings at Kalamazoo - NO, still working on it (I don't know my schedule yet, waiting to hear back from a collaborator, etc.)
    5. Get to the point on the sweater where I divide for the arms - YES; knitting goals are the absolute best

But this week everything is FALLING APART.

Not in a bad way. It's spring break for the Kiddo, and I thought that he had camp Tues-Fri, but when we showed up at camp on Tues morning, it turned out that it didn't start until Wed. So that was a pain.

Also I don't have internet at home, AGAIN. We're on Day 9. I have absolutely had it with Verizon and I need to call them and yell at them, but...ugh. Who has the time?

And then it's mid-April, so the academic world is insane, and I'm going to a conference Fri-Sat (not presenting, fortunately), and Sunday is Easter, and ye gods next week is HORRENDOUS, as the last full week in April always is.

So. Since it's already Wednesday and I'm struggling, here are the week's goals (definitely not what I would have said they'd be on Sunday, but more realistic):

    1. Weekly things TWICE instead of x5 is FINE. Exercise, language, sitting.
    2. I do want to write x4, though (and I've already done it x3, so this is manageable).
    3. Knit at least a couple of inches of sweater.
    4. Orchestrate all the minutia and try not to fall too far behind on email.
    5. Call stupid Verizon if the internet isn't fixed by the time that I get home today.
