Intermission week 3

We start properly next week so I thought we might as well have a final placeholder in case there are things to share - work doesn't stop, so TLQ important stuff should also carry on!  Autumn is slowly getting going here, and I needed to wear a cardigan for a couple of hours yesterday which was a pleasant treat.

Here's Shoutypants having a nice bath to be all spruced up ready for the start of the new session - cats are so bendy (and black cats are hard to photograph).

  1. I SO do not want it to be the start of the trimester. :-(

This week just gone I fed back on the last bits for Junior PhD student (well, nearly. A little more to do on Monday), the revise and resubmit paper is RESUBMITTED, I did a bit of work on a related grant application, I worked on the paper due 15th Sept but we have a LOT left to do, sigh (special issue deadline. Time I guess for some of the embarrassing special pleading stuff). went to the Away Day which felt pretty pointless, went to various meetings and did one training (one urgent one still to do on Monday) and got a fairly large chunk of teaching prep done. not enough, but a chunk.

Coming week is the last one before students return and has fewer meetings in it. MUST finish the teaching prep, work on the paper with the 15th deadline, set up four VLE sites, work on a shorter contribution for a different paper... sigh!

  2. We may have had a holiday on Monday, but this week hit like a ton of bricks. I taught my first class, had lots of meetings, got my Canvas sites up and running properly. And yet:
IH annual progress reports NOT YET
IH assessment SOMEONE ELSE IS DOING IT< YAY
IH Vote on revised P&P WILL GET IT OUT TOMORROW
    IH Admissions stuff NOT YET
    Communications people YES
    AND ALSO
    - get course websites functioning YES
    --started staffing committees

So lots of this will roll over into this week. I did learn last week that my sweet eager honors student REALLY likes to talk, so I'm starting to schedule things for an hour after our scheduled meeting so I can end it. (And I feel guilty, I understand, but I can't do 2 hours a week.)

For this coming week, everything I haven't done, and then I've scheduled my flu and COVID shots, and I need to get my desk clear. Baby steps.

    1. Good tactic with the honours student! It's hard when they're just enthusiastic, but I'm increasingly impatient of students who don't realise our time is limited and they are not the only ones we need to see.

  3. I had to peer at the photo hard to work out which bits of Shoutypants were which!

Last week was quite productive in terms of getting reading done and a (very) rough outline of the chapter, though that has highlighted where all the gaps are. This coming week I have the second PhD thesis to read, an article to review and more reading to do. But not having teaching prep makes SUCH a difference, so I won't complain.

  4. I should add that I think a weekly picture of Shoutypants is an excellent addition to my life!

    1. Definitely!
If anyone wants some small bits of happy local news, I can tell you that Morgana, after having five teeth out a couple of weeks ago, has healed beautifully and also impressed the vet with how cooperative and sweet she is. Furthermore, I have managed to organize an SCA demonstration of medieval combat techniques for my undergrad course, and also to take said class to experience a neo-Gothic church interior (obviously real Gothic is not an option here, and I can show them pictures all day long but I want them to feel what it is like to be in the space). I'm pleased about all these things.
