2025 MidYear Session, Week 6

We have just had a couple of days of Really Hot Weather by UK standards - which means humid and sticky and miserable, given our infrastructure is all set up around the oceanic climate norms of cool, damp, and frequently windy.  So lets talk about heat-wave beverages and treats - what would you ideally have on hand?  I've already written about my Grandma's lemonade, but elderflower cordial made up with cold water, ice and a dash of sparkling water is another lifesafer, or Citron Presse.  And putting individual serve smoothie pouchs or yoghurt tubes designed for kids into the freezer creates healthy delicious ice-lolly type treats for grownups too.  What about you?

LAST WEEK'S GOALS:

  1. Hello. That was another week (they keep going past...) and it was dominated by the weather - I do not do well with humidity and hot weather, and my digestive system was very unhappy with me (I think it was just the heat and lack of sleep). Plus things kept getting moved around at work. Sigh! I'm getting so little done...

    LAST WEEK
    1) building better habits: one creative thing with the hands, keep reading for pleasure, start a new yarn project I got my painting stuff out and did a little noodling, I read some, I didn't start the yarn project
    2) Environment: get caught up on chores, make the most of spending time with the decluttering person hah hah no, she had to cancel due to a Poorly Child so is rescheduled for a couple of weeks' time, which also threw me off
    3) blocks: no goals this week that was a realistic choice
    4) writing: referee another article: at least one hour on each of three different projects with meetings this week or next yes, and it was GRIM and it took ages because I was trying hard not to be mad at the author for wasting my time/carefully work out the actionable comments and the correct tone for them to write the review. This was a re-review and... they did all the easy stuff but not the heart-of-the-problem stuff; I did about an hour on one project, the review just ate the time
    5) grad students: meetings, comment on mountain of first draft of discussion from now-senior graduate student missed one due to unhappy gut, did not get to commentary - now urgent
    6) be kind to myself and stick to the three days. pretty much

    NEXT WEEK:
    1) building better habits: one creative thing with the hands, keep reading for pleasure, start a new yarn project
    2) Environment: get caught up on chores, electric meter visit, book car for service
    3) blocks: no goals this week
    4) writing: at least one hour on each of three different projects with meetings this week
    5) grad students: meetings, comment on mountain of first draft of discussion from now-senior graduate student, try to sort out review meeting for junior MSc by Research student
    6) be kind to myself and stick to the three days.

    1. Two out of three seems good on the habits, you were realistic about blocks, you can't help having poorly children happen, nor authors who don't tackle the hard stuff. I hope you sleep better this week!

  2. I hear you on the heat. It was over 30 degrees when I was in Paris, in a building equally poorly set up to cope (no air-con, and none in either of the restaurants that had been booked). Thankfully, the hotel did have air con, so I could sleep, at least. It is now cooler back home, though set to be warm again when I'm back in London next weekend.

    How I did:
    1. Prep for workshop (read papers for my session, think of some discussion points), try to enjoy workshop when it happens - YES (despite heat)
    2. Finish PhD thesis if time. - NO
    3. Review for PhD student. - YES, but need to write it up.
    4. Read book in library in Paris on Wednesday afternoon. - YES, and met with very bright French PhD student doing similar research.
    5. Pack for trip, organise son's expedition (possibly at a distance) - YES, and the expedition went well.
    6. Enjoy weekend with friends! - YES. It was hot again on Saturday in London, but we caught a bit of a breeze on the river, found a couple of air-conditioned museums to hang out in, had expensive cocktails, and talked for hours.

    This week:
I'm back down to London next weekend so daughter can visit one of the universities, and then I'm heading down to Spain for another workshop, going all the way by train, which is maybe insane, but a nicer way to travel than flying. So this is quite an intense week for clearing stuff out of the way. Plus my brother and family are visiting Thursday-Sunday.

    1. Write and submit report for PhD review.
    2. Read chapter for a PhD student.
    3. Finally finish French PhD I was reading.
    4. Read a paper the French PhD student has sent me and email back with comments.
    5. Last big meetings of term, get Windows upgrade, do other work-related admin, catch up on emails.
    6. Self-care: read, exercise, catch up on TV series, enjoy time with brother and niece.

    1. I'm glad you had fun with your friends! And I hope your trip to Spain goes well. Good luck with clearing the decks this week, and I hope you have a lovely time with your brother's family.

  3. Dilute lemonade, I guess, or iced rooibos tea. ATM, I'm just trying to drink enough water. I'm in NYC, and the temps might be manageable if they were dry heat, but they're not. And can I just say that central air conditioning does a much better job, more efficiently, than window units, and I'm grateful to Sir John for insisting on it in any house we bought.

    How I did:
    - write next conference paper: YES
    - errands in Our Quaint Village (previous town): YES
    - swim x3 (pool is reopening!!), cardio & weights x2: swim x2 (forgot about Juneteenth holiday), YES, yoga x3 though I guess I didn't list it.
    - pack for next trip: YES
    - tasks for summer TA (very urgent!): YES
    - continue progress on clearing study and/or guest room: no
    - read book for mystery group meeting: YES

    New goals:
    - enjoy conference and visiting friends
    - write down everything anyone wants me to do and leave it till I get home

    2. I love writing stuff down so I don't have to worry about it at the moment!

  4. Realise I forgot to answer the prompt! I don't have any homemade versions of drinks, but anything citrus is always good. I never used to drink iced coffee, because it seemed like a contradiction in terms, but having tried it a couple of years ago, I'm now a convert.

  5. I had a lovely week in Paris which was, as Julie noted HOT. My sister has double glazed windows and a ceiling fan, which kept things reasonably comfortable, but we started doing things in hte morning and sitting in the cool in the afternoon.

I drink a lot of water in hot weather, sometimes sparkling water with lemon as a treat... and cold main dish salads.

This week I have to prepare for a workshop and give a keynote. Then I am heading off to Cornwall for a holiday, during which my sabbatical ends. But I hope because it's July 1, the world will be asleep and mostly ignore me. Goals:
    1. Make sure power point is set up for talk
    2. Read paper one more time. Do I dare read off my i Pad?
    3. Spend some time with microfilm
    4. Read essay for young scholar
    5. Enjoy the workshop
    Get ready for vacation

I'll try to touch base next week, as my friend and I have both admitted with regret that we will have to work during our holiday!

    1. I should have said that I did finish reading the dissertation chapter, had a long talk with my grad student, and also did a whole lot of life admin that needed doing... Life admin never ends!

  6. Hm--I do enjoy a gin and tonic, or lemonade is good, or...just ice water can be deeply pleasurable! It's very hot today (we're having a mini heat wave--just 3 days--which will be followed by cool days and some rain), but for some reason I can't really think of anything.

    Last week:
    1. Round of revisions to article - YES; I think it's nearly done
    2. Italian novel to p. 196 - YES
    3. Draft fall syllabus - YES, roughly
    4. Start reading book to review - YES
    5. Respond to student re. grad handbook; finish (??) handbook revisions - Drafted a response and final(?) handbook revisions; awaiting committee feedback

    This week:
    1. Finish book to review
    2. At least 50 pp. of Italian novel
    3. Keep my inbox(es) fairly clear
    4. Finish green sweater that I don't really like

Hm--I can't really think of anything else, which is quite luxurious!
